Trevor Tracker: Week 14 Edition

A breakdown of Trevor Lawrence's recent performance against the Indianapolis Colts.

Trevor Tracker: Week 14 Edition

Hello again, and congratulations to anyone who refused to sell any of their imaginary stock in Trevor Lawrence.

The former No. 1 overall pick is arguably playing the best football of his NFL career.

Let's take a look at Lawrence's Week 14 performance through the lens of some passing splits.

Data included in charts courtesy of PFF. See bottom of article for a glossary.

  • That's a lotta green!
  • Sunday was the second-best game of Lawrence's career in terms of PFF grade (Week 14, 2022 @TEN) and the best in terms of big-time throw rate. By that metric, it was the ninth-best performance of any quarterback this season (min. 30 dropbacks).
  • Sunday was his second straight game with a 100+ passer rating and 0 turnover-worthy plays.
  • According to Jaguars PR, Lawrence has notched a passer rating north of 100 in six of eight career games against the Colts.
  • On screen attempts, Lawrence completed 3 of 4 passes (1 drop) for 21 yards and no first downs.
  • On play action attempts, he completed 4 of 8 passes (1 drop) for 27 yards and 2 first downs. He had an elite 92.5 PFF grade and a bonkers 18.2% big-time throw rate on such plays, each the second-best mark of the week behind Matthew Stafford.

This incompletion to Brian Thomas Jr. was a good throw; Thomas could've done a better job of working back to the football.

  • A 66.7% big-time throw rate on deep passes seems crazy high, but then again, the majority of throws charted as such are likely deep passes.
  • That said, Lawrence's 97.6 PFF grade on deep passes ranked third on the week behind Stafford and Aaron Rodgers.
  • He and Thomas were on another level on Sunday.
  • Over the past month, Lawrence ranks fourth with a 97.5 PFF grade on deep passes. He also leads the NFL in deep completions across the past five weeks.
  • On intermediate passes on Sunday, Lawrence had the fifth-highest PFF grade of the week.
  • This touchdown was well designed, and Jakobi Meyers ran a great route, but it was nice to see the touch Lawrence delivered on the pass.
  • Lawrence had the third-highest PFF grade under pressure and picked up the fourth-most first downs against the blitz (7) in Week 14.
  • His marquee throw came against a zone blitz with an unblocked pressure.
  • This dot to Tim Patrick with a defender in his face was perhaps Lawrence's most underrated throw of the day.
  • Lawrence let it rip on Sunday, whether he got the ball out quickly or not.
  • His 9.4 average depth of throw on passes thrown in under 2.5 seconds was easily the highest number of the week. This is Lawrence's superpower (as I said before Sunday): the ability to get the ball out quickly without sacrificing downfield aggressiveness.
  • The only quarterback with a lower TTT and a higher ADOT than Lawrence in 2022 (his best career season to date) was Tua Tagovailoa, who was throwing to the NFL's fastest receiver duo in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
  • And when Lawrence wasn't getting the ball out quickly on Sunday, he stayed calm and collected.
  • I can't wait to watch this passing offense with Travis Hunter, Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers (assuming he re-signs), and Brenton Strange all healthy next year. For now, Lawrence has found a groove in his surrounding environment.
  • "He has been throwing it good, I think, for especially the last four weeks," Coen said Wednesday. "It's not anything necessarily that's changed about anything that we've done with him, I think he's just starting to feel more and more comfortable within the system and within the guys that he's playing with."
