For now, here's a film-based breakdown of Lawrence's Week 1 performance against the Panthers.

The Good

Lawrence's best throw came on a play action pass to Brenton Strange in the first quarter.

Both of Carolina's DEs crashed inside, causing the pocket to condense in a hurry. Lawrence felt the pressure and drifted left before uncorking a fastball down the middle of the plate.

No notes.

With 48 seconds remaining in the first half, Lawrence marched the offense down the field on a 5-play drive (including a quarterback spike) with completions of 3, 7, 11, and 23 yards. It led to a 47-yard field goal to put the Jaguars up by 17 at the half.

Travis Hunter was objectively open on the first play but Lawrence had pressure in his face before he could there in the progression. Nice job of getting the ball out to the flat.

Brian Thomas Jr. appears to be open on the second play but Panthers CB Jaycee Horn (#8) had eyes on the quarterback and was playing deep in his Cover 2 shell. I again like the decision by Lawrence to check the ball down to Etienne, who had plenty of room to work with and picked up the first down.

The final two plays were good calls against Carolina's soft two-minute defense. Credit to Dyami Brown for his crisp route that leveled off evenly, allowing him to come back to the football, rather than rounding off his path.

Lawrence has never been hailed for his accuracy, at least not during his pro career, but he can hit any throw when the windows are that wide. All four of those passes were about finding the most grass to work with.
